This Is Going To Hurt was written by the British comedian Adam Kay and was first published in 2017 by Picador Books. It recalls the hilariously funny memoirs of a junior doctor throughout his career in what can only be described as a heart wrenching, almost impossible profession.

This Is Going To Hurt provides distinguished insight into the medicinal profession, particularly giving attention to working in a hospital environment. It’s very comprehensive in the way it details the structure of the NHS and the various roles that it consists of. Yet it is accessible in that it debunks medical terms you’ve never heard of in ways that sometimes made me literally LOL (for lack of a better term).

This book is without doubt unquestionably funny. Even at times when it shouldn’t be, the occasional tone of cynicism turns an otherwise dire situation into a witty anecdote. These satirical accounts are bound to render you hysterical.

Each chapter starts off reminiscent as it recollects a particular stage in Kay’s medical career before the narrative switches from prose to a series of diary entries. These entries are where most of the comedy comes from even though it is written in a very matter-of-fact style, with hints of cynicism.

This Is Going To Hurt is very opinionated in terms of how it defends the NHS but also Kay unreservedly speaks his mind with mostly coarse and unfiltered language, cleverly twisted to invoke a comedic tone, except in the letter he addresses to the Health Secretary. Kay also discusses through his diary entries what marked the turning point in his profession that led to his eventual departure from medicine. This was among the more serious moments in the books where you recovered from the unrelenting comic relief to take stock on the unimaginable pressures that come from working in such an unforgiving environment.

This Is Going To Hurt instigates topical political conversation about the dire state of the NHS despite the sometimes squeamish moments in the book. As I mentioned earlier, I think it is very distinguished how this book discusses a hugely important, very serious matter in such a way that makes you appreciate the severity of the issue concerning the NHS but also makes you smile.
